IN THE NEWS: Marlborough nabs another life science biz: Boston Biomedical Assoc.

Boston Biomedical Associates plans to move to Marlborough next April, the latest in a series of life science companies to set their sights on the city in Boston’s western suburbs.
Currently based in several offices scattered throughout a building on West Main Street in Northborough, the medical product consulting firm will move all 52 of its Massachusetts-based employees into one centralized office at 100 Crowley Drive, according to Tim Cummings, executive director of the Marlborough Economic Development Corp. The new office is about 17,000 square feet, more than 50 percent bigger than the current space, and upstairs from healthcare IT services company Park Place International, which has offices throughout the country and 45 employees in Marlborough.
The space will be leased from building owner First Colony Development, which just finished the building about four years ago, just before the economic collapse. But in recent years, the City of Marlborough has made strides to attract some of the area’s biggest life science companies in the past year.
“Economic development 101 is all about cluster development,” said Cummings. “We realized he had a healthy amount of life sciences companies here already.”
Cummings said between five and 10 new life sciences and medical device companies have moved in in the past five years, and between 10-20 percent of the city’s businesses is now in that sector, he said. Boston Scientific plans to move its headquarters there next year from its current Natick location, and Quest Diagnostics is in the midst of constructing a new laboratory in a site called Forest Park, near the abandoned site where Hewlett-Packard Co.used to be.
